The red panda is not actually a species of panda - nor is it a raccoon, a weasel, a bear, or a cat. Classification of this animal has stumped scientists for quite a while due to its many superficial similarities with other mammals. As of now, it is generally excepted to be the only member of its genus and family; however, it is possible there might actually be two species of red panda. They can only be found in the forests of the Himalayas and southwestern China, where they survive on an omnivorous diet of bamboo, leaves, fruit, insects, eggs, and small mammals and birds.
