Domestic ducks are a subspecies of mallards that came about after being raised by humans for thousands of years. They have been raised since the Neolithic Age in Southeast Asia through the existence of the Roman, Egyptian, and Ming Empires, and are still bred across the world today. Despite functionally being a mallard, they have many different characteristic. For one, they are typically all white; however, they also behave quite differently. They no longer possess their territorial instinct, and are also polygamous rather than monogamous. These behavioral changes make them easier to efficiently raise on farms. They are raised for food, feathers, as well as for pets. Their friendly behavior makes them a popular character choice in children’s stories.
