Alligator snapping turtles are a very large, freshwater species that are only found in the southeastern United States. They are opportunistic ambush predators that wait camouflaged on the beds of rivers, ponds, and streams. Unlike their smaller relative, the common snapping turtle, alligator snapping turtles possess a pink, worm-shaped tongue that they use as a lure to attract fish and frogs right into their jaws. Their bite force is enough to snap a broom stick in half.
