Raccoons are medium sized, nocturnal mammals commonly found in North America. Being omnivorous, they will eat just about anything that is edible, explaining why they frequently rummage through trash cans. Although deciduous forests are the original habitat of raccoons, their omnivorous and nocturnal lifestyle, combined with their high intelligence, make them especially suited to living in urban areas. Active in the dark, they sacrifice long distance vision for one of the best senses of touch of all the mammals. Specialized whiskers on their feet allow them to identify objects before they even make contact with them.
