“Bigfin squid” or “long-arm squid” are nicknames used to describe any of several deep sea squid species in the family Magnapinnidae. These squids all share a very unique body type, being marked by a massive fin relative to their body size and very straight tentacles with long appendages that hang perpendicular from the ends. They are fairly new species to science, being first discovered in 1907, first photographed in 1988, and first described in 1998. Very little is known about this family, scientists can not even be sure of how they feed.
