Living 2000 m above sea level in the Rocky Mountains, Sierra Nevada, and Mount Rainier, yellow-bellied marmots form colonies of up to 20 individuals. They spend most of their day within their underground burrows, but come to the surface occasionally to search for grains, flowers, legumes, and insects. The marmots are always on the lookout for their predators such as foxes, coyotes, and eagles. Upon spotting a threat, a marmot will whistle to alert the others to hide in their burrows until it’s gone.
