Contrary to the threatening name, giant devil rays are filter feeders that catch small prey in their wide mouths, guiding said organisms in with two “horns” on the front of their faces. More in line with the name, they are the only rays in the Mobula genus that possess a functioning stinger. Like the other Mobula species, they are known to leap out of the water for no known reason. Given that they are social creatures, traveling in groups of up to 15, it is possible that this display is simply for fun or to impress others giant devil rays.
