Cookie Cutter Shark (Isistius brasiliensis)

The cookie cutter shark is a small shark that gets its name from its unique feeding habit of cutting round chunks out of large marine fish and mammals using its specialized jaws. Being too small to effectively threaten its own prey, it hides in the darkness at depths of 1-4 km during the day, and rises up to just below 80 m depths at night to take bites out of its unsuspecting victims. It also has rows of green light emitting organs on its underside to disrupt its silhouette when viewed from below in the water, protecting it from surprise attacks.
