Wolf (Canis lupus)

Wolves are nocturnal hunters that inhabit regions of Eurasia and North America. They are well known for living in packs with hierarchical social structures. These packs are comprised of one or more family units and are always led by an alpha male. When competition for food exists within the group, young wolves often leave in search of a new pack to join. These wolves become known as “lone wolves”, and it is important that they find a new pack before reaching sexual maturity. Otherwise, the alpha males will see it as competition for mates and most likely kill the newcomer. Packs follow trails together and administer coordinated, cooperative attacks to take down prey much larger than themselves. When food is scarce, a wolf will also settle for smaller prey, fruit, and carcasses. However, strong packs will try to mark out territory much larger than would normally be necessary to try and avoid food shortages.
