Laughing Kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae)

Laughing kookaburras are Australian birds in the kingfisher family that emit a laugh-like sound when defending their territory. Diet- and feeding-wise they are quite different from the average kingfisher, choosing to strike terrestrial prey like lizards and mice with their feet instead of fishing with their bills. They naturally live in Australia’s eucalyptus forests; however, they are one such species that is very well adapted to live in cities and suburbs, being very tolerant of humans. They stay in close families to best protect their territory. A male will live and breed with one female it’s whole life, and up to five young will stick around to help before they reach adulthood themselves.
