Common Ostrich (Struthio camelus)

The common ostrich is the largest bird alive today and is only found in Africa. It’s early prehistoric ancestors were capable of flight; however, it abandoned this ability in favor of very powerful legs. It uses its legs to run at speeds of 55 km/h and to deliver strong kicks when threatened. Unlike other birds, the common ostrich only has two toes - a large toe to withstand the impact of running and a small toe for balance.
