Giant Golden-Crowned Flying Fox (Acerodon jubatus)

Getting their name from the golden fur atop their heads, giant golden-crowned flying foxes have the largest wingspan of any bat in the world. They are nocturnal fruit-eaters that inhabit the forests of the Philippines that fly along rivers at night. Clearings in the forest made by rivers give the flying foxes enough room to fly as well as host their favorite food - figs. They cannot echolocate like the insect eating bat species, so they have well-developed pupils to aid their vision at night. They are known to fly across water between islands to acquire food. However, they can emit noises to communicate with their roost members over long distances when they are away from home.
