Honduran white bats are also known as Caribbean white tent-making bat because of their engineering capabilities. They build shelters out of large leaves by weakening the middle ridge with their teeth and allowing the leaf to bend into a triangle shape in which they rest together during the day. The leaf protects them from rain and predators - a necessary defense considering their small size. They live off of a strict diet of one species of fig. Considering its name, it is a tropical species that can be found in Honduras as well as Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. The yellow skin color seen in their noses and ears is derived from the large amounts of carotenoids in the figs they eat and is the only example of this in nature.
